Getting to Manila - Day 1

I'm writing this, refreshed and sipping on a much needed cup of coffee, from my room at the Hyatt City of Dreams in Manila. Let me tell you, that hotel name is no joke. I was lucky enough to somehow score an upgrade to a suite here, and this room is like twice the size of my apartment. The bathroom alone is bigger than my living room, with a huge walk in rain shower, and massive soaker tub that you better believe I took full advantage of last night when I finally arrived here after 18+ hours of travel. I slept like an angel in my king sized bed, after doing something I only ever do on holiday... watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians. That show is pure trash, as you know, but it is often the only thing on English TV in foreign countries, and also a  really fucking awesome way to fall asleep.

So, I haven't blogged in a while, obviously. While this isn't my normal blog subject matter, I figured picking this back up again on my travels might be fun! I've never blogged while travelling before, and apparently it's a thing kids do these days, so let me give it a go. I am gonna touch on the veggie meals I'm able to find on my travels, which I think is going to be an adventure in itself since the Philippines LOVES meat!

To start things off, a review of my journey here! I flew my fave, Air Canada, into Taipei. It was my second time flying on the Dreamliner, first time internationally. I was #blessed because, despite being in econo class, the middle seat next to me was empty, so I had a ton of space to spread out. Leg room and seat width is stellar on these planes, even for a tall, broad broad like myself.

So, it was me in the window seat, my imaginary friend in the middle, and a gold miner in the aisle seat. I assume he was a gold miner, because he spent most of the 12.5 hours flight with his index finger crammed so far up his nose that I assume there must have been gold up there. Or maybe Bitcoin? I still don't understand what Bitcoin is, so there must be a decent chance it's boogers, right? If you've ever wondered what a nostril that has evolved to be the exact depth and width of a human finger looks like, this guy would be your Exhibit A. I nearly took a picture, but I decided to be polite and not submit it into evidence. You're lucky, booger dude. I feel sorry for all the cabin crew that had to handle everything your snotty paws touched.

The flight itself was very comfy with minimal turbulence. A few times throughout the flight, a delicate, refreshing minty eucalyptus scent wafted through the vents. At least, I assume it was coming through the vents. It might've been the person behind me using mouthwash or something. Just like alients probing our tender human buttholes in the dark of night, it will remain a mystery, but an enjoyable mystery nonetheless.

I ordered vegetarian meals for the flight, but all ended up being fully vegan, which was great. Lunch was fairly bland, but I inhaled it nonetheless because I was starving as there had been minimal veg options in lounge options before I boarded (oh woe, I had to consume coffee and wine instead). The meal consisted of a quinoa salad and pasta (both of which only tasted like food once s+p were added), with a bread roll (which must have also been gluten free, because it crumbled to dust as soon as I glanced at it) and a cookie for dessert. The cookie was surprisingly good, and definitely the best part of the meal. Oh and obviously I had more wine, because why (wine lololol) not. And then I took a wine nap.

Dinner looked unappetizing, but was surprisingly delicious. A rice pilaf with artichokes and veggies, with a barley and chickpea salad, as well as another dust roll and cookie for dessert. The non-veg travellers got fresh fruit for dessert, which I would've much rather had, and almost wanted to barter with my seat mate for the cookie, but then I remembered where his finger had been.

We reached Taipei through one of the foggiest, wettest landings I have ever experienced, and I connected to my 2 hours Philippine Airlines connector to Manila. The flight was jammed (I think mostly thanks to the lady sitting next to me, who appeared to have purchased the entire stock of the duty free store), but comfortable enough for a short connector. The highlight being, of course, that I got fed again. Dinner was simple potatoes and veggies, somewhat underwhelming as I'd been hoping for some delicious Asian/Filipino fare, but edible and tasty still. But the dessert was... I don't even know what the fuck it was. Some sort of hard gelatinous shit, that had what looked like a bird fetus floating in it. I don't think they serve balut on flights, particularly to vegetarians, but that is what it looked like. I tried it, because that's just the kind of person I am. It was gross. 0/10 would not eat again.

And now I am here, in Manila! I have to check out, regretably, in about an hour, and I will venture out into the city to find some food and adventure before my overnight bus to Banaue tonight. Farewell, friends, I will update next from my hut near the rice fields!
